“Joy of life” in nursing homes. Healthcare personnel experiences of the implementation of the national strategy. A qualitative study with content analysis of interviews

Abstract Background Nursing homes are under strong pressure to provide good care the residents. In Norway, municipalities have applied ‘Joy-of-Life-Nursing-Home’ strategy increase a health-promoting perception that focuses on older persons` resources. Implementations represent introducing changes healthcare personnel; however, changing one’s working approaches, routines and culture may be demanding. On this background, we explored how is perceived by employees in retrospective, over period after implementation which challenges experience with implementation. Method We used qualitative approach interviewed 14 personnel nursing one Norwegian municipality, had implemented strategy. The analysis was conducted following Kvale’s content analysis. Results main categories were: (a) characteristics of activities before implementations ‘Joy-of-Life-Nursing-Home’, (b) influenced activities, (c) ‘Joy-of-Life-Nursing-Home’. Some informants spoke well about concerning quality stating “ see joy eyes resident then I feel succeeded”. For who experienced resistance toward implementation, they felt it too much document, complicated, requirements were many. Conclusions Quality seems increased as informants. Nevertheless, fact seemed divided into two different groups related their perspective concerning. One group has positive experiences process benefits it, while other lack problems process. To understand what facilitates hinders research contextual factors like work environment leadership recommended.
